Inverse Psoriasis: Hidden But Painful

Also known as intertriginous psoriasis, inverse psoriasis is one of the many types of psoriasis. It appears as red lesions in skin folds such as the armpits and under the breasts.

Patients with inverse psoriasis may also experience another type of psoriasis on their other parts of their body at the same time.

Cause and symptoms

The cause of inverse psoriasis is an abnormality in the immune system. While other types of psoriasis develop plaques and flaky skin, inverse psoriasis is smooth due to the sweat and friction in skin folds.

Inverse psoriasis is also common in overweight people. Extra body weight produces excess skin and deeper skin folds, resulting in higher chances of developing inverse psoriasis. Middle-aged and seniors also have higher chances of experiencing inverse psoriasis.

There’s no known cure to inverse psoriasis, but patients can manage the symptoms with several treatment methods.

  • Systemic drugs
This biologic treatment changes the way your immune system works. It prevents your immune system from attacking your own body by using protein to block your body responses.
  • Phototherapy
Patients going through phototherapy will absorb artificial UVB rays in a session. These rays will slow the process of skin growth.
  • Topical treatment
Patients will apply steroid creams on the affected area to reduce inflammation. However, doctors have to monitor the dosage of the creams to prevent skin thinning.
  • Infected inverse psoriasis treatment
With the knowledge that inverse psoriasis is prone to yeast and fungal infections, doctors may add anti-yeast and anti-fungal agents into diluted steroid creams.

Lifestyle adjustment

Patients with inverse psoriasis can adjust their lifestyle habits to manage their symptoms further.

A few adjustments such as wear loose clothing and comfortable such as cotton materials to allow your skin to breathe and powdering your affected areas to absorb moisture can go a long way in managing inverse psoriasis. Reducing stress is also known to control psoriasis.
